Because David’s bestselling book is so comprehensive, people often can get a long way with self-teaching. However, in this video veteran GTD coach Robert Peake shares some of the common misunderstandings he has come across from those who try too hard to do things “by the book”–and how you can correct them.
I really liked hearing about the pitfalls people fall into and would love to hear more that you have seen. I tend to fall into the trap of looking at latest and loudest too often instead of making time to work on what’s in my system.
Excellent, thanks for letting us know. “Latest and loudest” is indeed a big trap, and the threefold nature (just being aware of it) can start to help.
Thanks Robert, I really liked this one. These misunderstandings were exactly why I signed up to coaching with Next Action Associates last year – when I realised I was tinkering with the “mechanics” after years of following the books and podcasts. I was close, but I wasn’t 100% and that kept me from reaching that place of relaxed focus. Thanks to you, Ed, Todd and team for all the good work and the podcasts through lock-down!
Good for you for recognising what you needed for your next level of game, and making the investment of time and energy to get there, Mike.
Thanks for this video Robert. Indeed the second and third items are very common to lose track in my system. I often get so much to do that I miss the chance in the Weekly Review to get creative, but instead just organize the system, and due to that comes the third point you mentioned, where we are just reacting to the loudest item of the day, instead of planning and choosing what would have a more significant impact for us and our companies. Thanks again for sharing this content!
Sounds like this prompted a useful self-reflection for you Rodrigo. Glad to hear it.
